About Us
Community Opportunity was established in 2007, after a visit to Malawi by Jess Howarth, where she met an inspirational man who told her his story.
Samson
Samson Chaziya was born and raised in Malawi in a very poor family. He worked hard and raised enough money for primary education, which at that time had to be paid for. After finishing school, because there were no jobs in his area, he moved to the capital to look for work and a better life.
Unfortunately, he ended up on the streets. But, after some time Samson found work in a bakery. He worked hard and gained respect and knowledge from his employer. Slowly, he managed to raise enough money to buy some land and start farming pigs, thus supporting himself and his family.
In 2005, as famine gripped Malawi and many died from starvation, Samson recognised the need for community action in order to combat the difficulties that people were facing. Therefore, he turned his home into a feeding centre, known as “Samalani” (compassion).
Jess was inspired by what she saw and, upon her return to England, along with a group of like minded individuals and Sussex University, started the organisation Community Opportunity.

What We Do
Community Development
Community Opportunity recognises the local needs by working with inspirational, focused and forward thinking Malawians.
We are currently working with a community based organisation, called Samalani, which is based in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.
Samalani was established, in 2005, in response to community needs after famine hit Malawi.
Samalani offers early child development - including nursery and primary education, HIV/AIDS awareness, elderly and psycho-social support, youth and recreational programmes

Vocational Skills
We run programmes which teach business knowledge and provide courses and training in carpentry, knitwear and tailoring.
We also provide capital for structures and tools, advice and expertise needed for self help projects.

Education
Possibly the best chance of empowering children and young people, enabling them to change their lives for the better, is to provide them with the basic elements of education.
By sponsoring a child you can grant him or her access to secondary school education, which many Malawians miss out on, due to school fees that are often too high for the average family to afford.
